In the four decades since Path of Exile was initially released, I've attempted to play with it countless times. I start a new character and, before long, abandon them because I feel overwhelmed with the sheer intricacy--the commodity-based economy, freeform character development, and the nagging feeling that I'm playing it the incorrect way. However, with the release of its large Fall of Oriath expansion a month before, I decided to try once more, and I have finally seen the light. Path of Exile is not an easy POE game to get into, but if you stick with it, you will find the most richly rewarding ARPG on the market.
Path of Exile is a theory crafter's dream come true, the kind of POE match with apparently endless ways to construct and maximize your ideal personality. In addition to a standard leveling system is a passive skill shrub which makes Final Fantasy 10's Sphere Grid seem like a 'connect the dots' puzzle book for toddlers--and that's only the start. There's an Ascension system for further specializing your personality, a Pantheon system which provides you more passive bonuses for killing various gods and trapping their souls, the ability gems that lets you essentially spellcraft--the list goes on. And on. And on.
Oh, and I have not even mentioned loot. Never have I been so haunted by means of an inventory full of obscure knick-knacks and gizmos that I know do something but have no clue if that something is worth doing. If you are somebody who enjoys understanding the basic concepts of a POE match right away, Path of Exile may feel hopeless.
