"We predicted it gothic fantasy at the time. It was a blend of trying to not look like every thing else, and also my passion for dark and filthy Italian zombie movies," says Erich Schaefer, describing the visually striking expression of the first Diablo game, on which he served as both direct designer and art director. I wanted you to kill the first monster by bludgeoning its head with a spade, before you got a sword," he adds. "A lot of those looks were based on my travels to castles, churches, and catacombs."

I love horror as a genre. And there are twisted memories that I have from all three," recalls Rob Foote, looking back in the shared visual impact that can be felt from Diablo to Diablo II to Diablo III. I recall the pursuit in Diablo II. And in Diablo III, when you help the farmer and go inside to meet his wife and she's only a skeleton in a rocking chair."

But being black, black, and gory is only 1 part of the equation; its own raw immediacy and the overall Diablo experience is what kept players. "Somehow, we hit a sweet spot in which even though things were dark and evil, you still felt like a superhero," says Erich Schaefer. This aspect of the show has played an important role throughout its history, and informs every decision the Diablo III staff at Blizzard makes.

"It is about this fantasy of becoming stronger and being able to slay the minions of hell," Joe Shely informs me. "Having the ability to reach new and crazy heights of character growth, and getting all sorts of things that enhance your abilities in ways that you can't even imagine. All battle is with critters, there are no enemies in Diablo. This is something that I believe is an significant part Diablo, that there isn't any grey field of morality running through it."
