"Even amidst unparalleled shift across the sport industry, we are eager to transition many of the signature components of the Pro Bowl -- that will go virtual in Madden NFL 21 -- to some new revolutionary experience for our players and fans," says NFL's EVP of club business and events Peter O'Reilly. "We remain committed to using our Pro Bowl platform to empower fans to practically celebrate the best players in the game."
"We're changing the Pro Bowl for lovers everywhere and bringing yet another amazing NFL experience to life in the way just Madden NFL can," added Chris Bruzzo, EA's EVP of advertising. "We're excited to work closely together with the NFL, our long-time partner, to maneuver the Pro Bowl to the digital areas of Madden NFL and participate in their first high-profile sporting event to go virtual. Our neighborhood is hungry for much more interactive experiences, thus we're always working to create more chances to bring them closer to the sports they love."
Legendary publisher EA isn't a stranger to controversy. When it's advertisements in UFC 4 or even review bombing of their latest Madden NFL match, the business is frequently the target of players' ire. EA's latest controversy, dubbed #EAGATE on Twitter, is wrapped up in the ongoing controversy about loot boxes, especially in the Ultimate Team mode in FIFA 21.
Ultimate Team is a mode that looks across EA's suite of sports games. It mixes elements of dream sports-style team management with all the deck-building of a classic card game. The loot box element comes from packs which players can buy to improve their teams. Those microtransactions create Ultimate Team the most lucrative mode in EA's sports games.
On the one hand, it's easy to write this off for anyone without skin from the sport. If someone's already spending tens of thousands of dollars opening packs, why shouldn't they go right to the source and get the players they want? But for the players who are active in Ultimate Team, it seems like a betrayal. Since Nick put it,"We grind/trade/open packs and can not touch these PIM gamers, but EA employees sell them to people secretly for $1,700?!?!" It creates an even wider gap between the haves and have-nots in the sport, without even the veneer of gamers getting high-rated players through skill.
