Absolutely this. The Venn diagram is just two individual circles. Individuals who buy sports games every year pretty much ONLY play sports games. Nonetheless, it's a market that very much has its own established base. That base doesn't include the typical /r/games user.
I play FIFA every year, don't play COD and play with a ton of different games, you people like me exist. Problem is, if you're a soccer fan, you don't have some other game to purchase other than FIFA, because there's simply no competition.
Even since then I have never picked up a sports match that wasn't free There is a slight problem with this though, where else are you going to go to receive your FIFA/NBA/NFL/Whatever video game kick?
Wow, I gotkindly contribute into the mods here, that trapped remark is some classy you'd never find the R/news mods doing that
I have bought the last three after they went on sale as a major hockey fan who's not into sports or sports matches, and was surprised all of the I see about NBA wasn't in this franchise as well.
I am frankly not sure precisely why. And as such I'm also gonna presume the games do not sell too.
